What is the difference between “license”, “serial number”, and “seat”?

OWC software uses licenses, or serial numbers, to manage the features and installations of our software products.

The software “License”, or “Serial number”, is the code you received when you purchased the software or enclosure with the software bundled. The License (serial number) is used to activate and deactivate the software on a particular computer, enabling that system to access all or some of the features of the software.

Most license (serial numbers) only allow you to use the software on a single computer, which we call a “seat”. Seats are the number of computers that can be used simultaneously with a given license. For example, a single seat of SoftRAID can be installed on ONE computer. If you have a (3) seat license you could install the software on (3) different computers.

To use all features of the software, it must be activated. Once activated the software can be deactivated and moved to another OS installation or host as needed.

If you need to install on multiple computers, but only have a single seat, we sell discounted additional seats that can be added to your license, making it cost-effective to use OWC software on many computers.
