SoftRAID for Mac – Important Steps to Protect Your RAID 4/5 Volumes With SSDs

With the release of SoftRAID version 8.0, we fixed a driver bug that could lead to file corruption if a NVMe or SSD fails or is replaced. To ensure your RAID 4 and 5 volumes take advantage of this fix, please follow the steps below based on your macOS version:

We have created this short video describing this problem and steps you can take to protect your RAID 4 and 5 volumes.

For macOS 15.0 and later:

  • After upgrading to macOS 15, validate your RAID 4 or 5 volumes to ensure correct parity data. This step only needs to be done once after upgrading.
  • For macOS 14.7.4 and earlier:

  • Disable TRIM for your SoftRAID volumes.
  • Validate your RAID 4 or 5 volumes to ensure correct parity data. This step only needs to be done once after disabling TRIM.

  • Note: For faster volume optimization, set the volume’s optimization to “Workstation” or “Server”. Follow these steps to change a volume’s optimization:

  • Click on the volume tile of the volume you want to select.
  • Choose “Optimize for” from the “Volume” menu and then select the desired optimization for this volume.
  • You can change the optimization for a volume at any time, including during a mirror rebuild or volume validate operation and the change will take place immediately.

The TRIM command checkbox is located under the SoftRAID > Settings > Disk menu.

The “Validate” function is located under the “Volume” menu.
