How many disks can I have in my RAID volume?

SoftRAID supports up to 16 disks per volume for all RAID types.

Minimum and maximum disks by RAID level:

  • RAID 0: Minimum 2 disks, Maximum 16 disks
  • RAID 1 (Mirror): Minimum 2 disks, Maximum 16 disks
  • RAID 4: Minimum 3 disks, Maximum 16 disks
  • RAID 5: Minimum 3 disks, Maximum 16 disks
  • RAID 1+0: Minimum 4 disks, Maximum 16 disks

Recommended: For RAID 4 and RAID 5, we recommend using up to 8 disks for optimal reliability.

Important: SoftRAID does not support adding disks to an existing volume to increase its capacity. To expand a RAID volume with additional drives, you must back up your data, delete the existing volume, create a new volume with all drives (old + new), and restore your data. See our FAQ: How do I change my RAID volume to a different RAID level?
