Does upgrading to SoftRAID 8 require me to reformat my disks, or erase my volume?

All SoftRAID versions from 4 to 8 share the same partition map structure, with only a few exceptions. This allows any SoftRAID volume to be easily connected to a macOS computer and automatically mounted. Additionally, since a limited version of the SoftRAID driver is included with all Intel Macs, SoftRAID volumes will mount on these systems, though with limited functionality.

Connecting a newer or older SoftRAID volume will never damage, erase, or destroy your data due to compatibility issues.

Exceptions:

  • SoftRAID 6.3 introduced support for 64K stripe unit sizes on RAID 4 and RAID 5 volumes. Earlier versions of SoftRAID cannot mount these volumes.
  • APFS volumes are not supported by SoftRAID 4 and 5 and will not mount.
  • Certain Windows RAID configurations are incompatible with macOS and will not mount, such as RAID 5 volumes with a 128K stripe unit size.
