Disk Hung Errors

When a Disk “Hangs”, this means an I/O was generated to the disk, and it failed to respond.

Most of the time when you get a “disk hung” error, it is caused by a connection issue. It may take additional troubleshooting to determine the cause of the problem.

HDDs (rotating disks) rarely hang from a problem with the drive. A HDD hang is most likely a communication or connection error. Make sure all cables are good, tightly connected, etc. If you continue to get hangs:

  • Replace the Thunderbolt or USB cable
  • Certify the disk to ensure it is reliable
  • Flash media (SSD/NVMe) can also hang from heat and in early stages of failure. If you were intensively using the disks when this happened, then it may be heat related.
