Why should I label my SoftRAID disks?

If you have many identical external disks, it is easy to confuse one with another unless you add some sort of label to identify them. SoftRAID allows you to add a label to each disk, which will appear throughout the SoftRAID application — in the disk tile, log entries, and email notifications.

By using the same label in SoftRAID as the one you place on the outside of the physical disk, you can always tell at a glance which physical disk corresponds to the one selected in the application. This helps prevent accidentally initializing the wrong disk or disconnecting a disk that is still in use.

Tip: If you select multiple disks and use Disk menu → Add Disk Label, SoftRAID will automatically number the labels to keep them unique. For example, if you enter “ThunderBay” as the label, SoftRAID will create ThunderBay 1, ThunderBay 2, ThunderBay 3, and so on — saving you time when setting up a new enclosure full of drives.
