What is volume safeguard and why should I use it?

Volume Safeguard protects you from accidentally destroying a volume that contains important data. When Safeguard is enabled on a volume, SoftRAID prevents any action that could destroy that volume or its data. For example, you cannot initialize or certify a disk if any volume on that disk has Safeguard enabled. SoftRAID will also prevent you from deleting or erasing a safeguarded volume.

Enabling and disabling Safeguard

You can enable or disable Safeguard at any time without any risk to your data. To change the Safeguard status:

  • Select the volume tile
  • Go to Volume menu – Safeguard – Enable or Disable

You will need your administrator’s password to change the Safeguard status.

Note: In some cases you may need to quit and relaunch the SoftRAID application before the Safeguard status change is reflected in the volume tile.

When to disable Safeguard

Safeguard has no impact during normal volume usage — you only need to disable it when performing actions that could delete your data, such as:

  • Erasing or deleting a volume
  • Initializing disks
  • Running disk certification

We recommend re-enabling Safeguard immediately after completing any of these actions.
