Rebuild Stopped

Rebuild Stopped

If you get the error, “the SoftRAID Rebuild Stopped”, it indicates an issue where the rebuild could not proceed. The most common cause for this is a volume with a damaged directory. MacOS usually posts an alert that the volume is damaged and is mounted read only.

For data safety reasons, SoftRAID does not rebuild volumes that are unmounted, or mounted read only.

You should BACKUP this volume immediately.

Troubleshooting

If you get this alert, and do not remember seeing a message that your volume is mounted read only, then unmount your volume and mount it again. The error should display.

  • If this is an HFS volume:

Purchase Disk Warrior, a third-party utility available from Alsoft.com. Run Disk Warrior and point it to your volume, and let it rebuild the directory and replace it. This will allow the volume to rebuild.

If you do not want to purchase Disk Warrior, then you must update your backup, erase the volume and copy the data back.

MacOS “Disk Repair” is unable to fix this problem and Disk Warrior is the only known third party utility that can rebuild an HFS volume.

  • If this is an APFS volume:

We have not yet seen this problem with APFS volumes. If you see this error, with an APFS SoftRAID volume, please contact OWC Technical Support.

  • If this is an ExFat or NTFS volume:

There are no MacOS tools that can rebuild a damaged ExFat or NTFS directory. You will need to backup, and erase the volume, then restore your data.
