How to get SoftRAID to ignore SMART status of predicted-to-fail disk.

If SoftRAID is notifying you of a SMART predicted failure on a disk that you want to continue using, you can disable SMART monitoring for that specific disk without affecting SMART monitoring on your other disks.

Important warning: We strongly recommend replacing any disk with a SMART predicted failure as soon as possible. Research shows that disks with SMART warnings are significantly more likely to fail within weeks or months. Disabling SMART warnings does not fix the underlying problem – it only silences the alerts.

Example scenario: You have an older iMac with an internal HDD that is “Predicted to Fail” by SoftRAID. Since you won’t be able to easily replace it yourself, you may choose to ignore SMART data on this drive until you can get the spare parts or go to the Apple Store for repair.

How to Disable SMART for a Specific Disk

  • Launch the SoftRAID application
  • Select the disk tile for the disk you want to disable SMART monitoring on
  • Go to Disk menu → Disable SMART

SoftRAID will stop checking SMART status for this disk and will no longer alert you about SMART warnings on this drive.

When You Might Do This

Common scenarios:

  • Testing a disk to see if SMART warnings are false positives
  • Using an old disk for non-critical scratch/cache data
  • Temporarily silencing alerts while waiting for a replacement drive to arrive
  • Internal drive that requires professional service to replace

We do NOT recommend this for:

  • Disks containing important data
  • Disks in RAID volumes storing critical files
  • Any disk you cannot afford to lose

Re-enabling SMART

To turn SMART monitoring back on for a disk:

  • Select the disk tile in SoftRAID
  • Go to Disk menu → Enable SMART

Better Alternative: Replace the Disk

Rather than disabling SMART warnings, consider:

  • Make sure your backups are up to date at all times
  • Ordering a replacement disk immediately
  • I

  • Moving critical data off the failing disk

Remember: SMART predicted failures are based on extensive research showing these disks are 20-60 times more likely to fail soon. Disabling the warning doesn’t reduce the risk.
