Dock Ejector 2.0: Enhanced Security and Improved Technology

Dock Ejector 2.0 introduces a cutting-edge driver extension built on Apple’s “DriverKit” technology. With this update, Dock Ejector can now be installed without requiring “Reduced Security” mode during install. If you were previously using Dock Ejector 1.x, you can now enable “Full Security” on your Mac—provided no other extensions require “Reduced Security.”

While this new technology enhances compatibility and security, we have identified a few limitations with DriverKit that we are actively working with Apple to address in future macOS updates.

This FAQ provides an overview of the dialog boxes you may encounter during the installation and use of Dock Ejector, along with clear explanations of their meaning.

Apple SuperDrive requires OWC System Extension

To fully utilize the USB charging port on your ThunderDock, the Dock Ejector requires installing a driver (kernel extension).

For this driver to function, you must approve the Dock Ejector extension in System Settings > Privacy & Security. Simply scroll down in the right-hand pane and look for the prompt to enable the OWC extension. Select “Allow” to approve OWC as a verified developer, ensuring the Dock Ejector operates as intended.

Once you have approved OWC as an identified developer, you will need to unplug and reconnect your dock to activate the Dock Ejector driver.

Apple SuperDrive requires an activated USB High Powered Port

The Apple SuperDrive requires a USB High-Powered Port to function. Since the Dock Ejector extension does not load automatically at startup, you will need to unplug and reconnect the dock to activate the driver. We anticipate this issue will be resolved in a future version of macOS.

Apple SuperDrive needs to be connected to a different port on your OWC Dock/Hub

Docks and hubs typically feature one high-powered USB port. This alert appears when the SuperDrive is connected to a “low-power” port. To resolve this, reconnect your SuperDrive to the high-powered port, which is clearly labeled on your OWC Dock or Hub.

Apple SuperDrive not compatible with this version of Dock Ejector on a 2023 Mac Pro

A kernel panic has been identified when using the Dock Ejector driver on the 2023 Mac Pro (affecting only this specific model). As a result, the Dock Ejector installer does not load the driver on 2023 Mac Pro systems. We anticipate this issue will be resolved in a future version of macOS.

In the meantime, please connect your SuperDrive directly to a USB port on the Mac Pro. When an update for Dock Ejector becomes available, you will receive an alert through Dock Ejector notifying you of the update.
