Can I add a disk to my RAID 4/5 SoftRAID array?

In short, no.

You can add a disk to replace a failed or removed drive in your RAID 4/5 array, but you cannot expand the total number of disks to increase capacity. SoftRAID only allows disk replacement when a volume shows a disk status of “Missing.” This expansion feature is not currently planned for development.

To expand your RAID array with additional drives, you must delete and recreate the volume.

This process is data-destructive, so back up all data first.

Steps to expand:

  • Back up all data
  • Delete the existing volume
  • Create a new RAID volume with all drives (old + new)
  • Select your desired file system
  • Restore your data
