How to resize a SoftRAID volume

SoftRAID allows the user to both expand and contract a volume. If a volume is reduced in size, a user can create another volume. If a volume is expanded, the volume can be resized to any available capacity, up to the maximum contiguous space available.

Resizing volumes is useful when you have replaced your disks, one by one, with larger disks, and want to increase the volume capacity. For example, you originally had a ThunderBay with 4X 4TB drives and have replaced them one by one with 12TB drives. The volume is still 12TB, unless you resize the volume to expand it to the full capacity available.

Note: you cannot add a disk to a RAID 4/5 volume to increase its capacity. These steps help you resize a volume when there is free (partition) space on the disks.

Limitations: the volume you want to resize must be the most recently created volume on the disks.

macOS

Steps:
1) Backup your data and unmount your volume to get started.
2) Launch the SoftRAID Application and click on the volumes tile for the volume you want to resize.
3) In the volumes menu, select “Disable Safeguard,” this will allow you to resize your volume. (you will need your standard admin password to do this)
4) Select the volume tile in SoftRAID, and in the volumes menu, “Resize volume”. If you want the maximum space available, use the default “Max” setting. If you want a custom size to your volume, you can designate the size, such as 8TB in the example above, then you can create another new volume after you resize your volume.

This step should complete in a few seconds. If it takes more than a minute, restart your machine, unmount your volume and try again.
