Do I need SoftRAID installed to read my volumes on another computer?

Windows

On Windows, the SoftRAID driver is not bundled into the operating system. You must install SoftRAID on any Windows computer before it can mount SoftRAID volumes.

Mac

No. On any Mac running a modern version of macOS, you can simply connect your SoftRAID enclosure and your volumes will mount automatically — no SoftRAID installation or license required. Give it a try!

The SoftRAID driver has been bundled directly into macOS by Apple since macOS 10.3 (Panther), so every Mac already has what it needs to read SoftRAID volumes right out of the box.

What You Can Do Without SoftRAID Installed

Without the SoftRAID application, you can read and write to your volumes normally — access your files, copy data, and work just as you would with any other external drive. What you cannot do is manage your RAID volumes: you won’t be able to monitor SMART data, receive health alerts, rebuild a degraded volume, or make any configuration changes. For day-to-day file access on another Mac, however, no installation is needed.

If you want full management capabilities on a second computer, you will need SoftRAID installed with an active Premium license. Additional seats by changing your SoftRAID subscription in the “My Account” section or on the License Management page.
